So, UGC lists out the names of the illegal and non-recognized universities every year. The mushroom growth of fake Vishwa Vidyalaya is a matter of great concern to the University Grants Commission (UGC) responsible for maintaining standards in Higher Education in the country.
After due verification, the UGC has prepared a total of 24 operating establishments as fake Universities. The UGC has also stated that “such self-styled, unrecognised Universities which are operating in contradiction of the UGC Act has been declared as fake and not authorise to confer any degrees or qualifications”. According to the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, only a University established by a Central, State/ Provincial Act or an institution deemed to be university under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer UGC specified degrees under section 22(3) of the Act.
What is Fake University
The term “fake” as it applies to an unrecognised university. Fake Universities stand for those institutions which are not approved by the regulator’s approval, i.e. UGC. These universities are likely as an institution class. These universities provide the student Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) courses in the various subjects and schemes. But there degree and certificate are not approved by the Indian govt and University Grant Commission (UGC).
How to Check If University is UGC Approved OR Not?
Following the UGC Act 1956 under Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, no any university is permitted to run colleges without the approval of UGC.
After due verification, the UGC has prepared a total of 24 operating establishments as fake Universities. The UGC has also stated that “such self-styled, unrecognised Universities which are operating in contradiction of the UGC Act has been declared as fake and not authorise to confer any degrees or qualifications”. According to the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, only a University established by a Central, State/ Provincial Act or an institution deemed to be university under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer UGC specified degrees under section 22(3) of the Act.
The University Grants Commission Act, 1956 under section 22(1) provides that a degree can only be awarded only by a University.
- Established under a Central, State/Provincial Act or
- An institution deemed to be university under section 3 of the UGC Act or
- An Institution especially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer the degree.
Further, Section 23 of the UGC Act prohibits using the word “University” by any institution other than a university established, as stated above. Students and the public are hereby informed that at present following 24 self-styled, unrecognized Fake Universities in India are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act in various parts of the Country.
